All cities were built differently: there are ones like Venice and Saint-Petersburg that “emerged” from water and ones like Rome, which was built on hills. Probably that is why there are so many stairs in the Eternal City, leading to the hill summits, which uncover truly amazing views.

Все города строили по-разному: есть такие, как Венеция и Санкт-Петербург, которые «выросли» из воды, а есть такие, как Рим, который строили на холмах. Наверное, поэтому в Вечном городе так много лестниц, ведущих к вершинам холмов, с которых открывается поистине удивительные виды.

When I wrote about Rome’s main attractions, I mentioned two places where museums are situated and I advised to visit them for their observations decks rather than for museums. You can read about them here. As usual, my aim is not to tell you about all observation decks that exist in Rome. I am going to tell about my favorite ones and the most interesting, in my opinion.   

Когда я писала об основных достопримечательностях Рима, я рассказывала о двух местах, в которых располагаются музеи, но советовала их посетить не ради музеев, а как раз ради смотровых площадок, и сейчас вы сможете прочитать о них. Опять же, я не ставлю перед собой цель рассказать обо всех. Я расскажу только о своих самых любимых, и интересных, на мой взгляд.

#1. The easiest to approach and, for sure, one of the first observation decks which appear on tourists’ route is the terrace on Piazza di Spagna, at the foot of Trinita dei Monti. You can see several streets and domes of many cathedrals from there. Entrance is free. The street, leading from terrace, is parallel to the main street of Rome – Via del Corso.

#1. Самая легкодоступная и, наверняка, одна из первых, которая попадается туристам во время прогулки – это терраса на площади Испании (Piazza di Spagna), у подножия собора Св. Троицы на Горе (Trinita dei Monti). Перед  вами откроется вид на несколько улиц и купола множества соборов. Вход свободный. От террасы идет улица почти параллельная главному римскому проспекту – Корсо (via del Corso).

 
 

#2. Down Via del Corso there is another observation deck named terrazza del Pincio. It goes to Villa Borghese park, which is the favorite place of Romans to spend their weekends. You can reach the terrace walking up a winding footpath that lies on the eastern part of piazza del Popolo. This terrace has amazing views of piazza del Popolo, Altare della Patria and Vatican district. I should add that fairly poor backlight of Rome seems quite impressive from there.
 

#2. Дальше вдоль по Корсо, ещё одна смотровая площадка, под названием терраса Пинчо (terrazza del Pincio). Она плавно переходит в парк у виллы Боргезе (Villa Borghese), где обожают отдыхать римляне. Подняться на террасу можно по извилистой тропинке, находящейся с восточной стороны площади Народов (piazza del Popolo). С площадки открывается чудеснейший вид на пьяцца дель Попполо, Алтарь Отечества (Altare della Patria) и Ватиканскую часть города. Добавлю, что довольно скудная подсветка Рима кажется весьма эффектной именно с это террасы.

  

#3. The observation deck of Altare della Patria (il Vittoriano) is my favorite. The first time I went up there, I swooned with admiration: Rome was spread before the eyes, and it was absolutely glorious from the height of 80 meters. Actually there are two observation deсks (with free and paid admission) and a view cafe on roof top of the palace. I recommend the one with paid admission, mostly because it is higher and it has views of the Acient Roman Forum, the Colosseum and The Capitoline Hill from one side and Medieval Roman Squares, Villa Borghese and many more sights from the other. Tickets cost 8-10 euro.

#3. Смотровая площадка на Алтаре Отечества (он же Викторианский дворец, или на итальянском – il Vittoriano) – моя самая любимая. Первый раз, поднявшись на нее, я просто замерла от восторга: весь Рим как на ладони, а с высоты 80 метров он еще прекраснее! На самом деле, на дворце есть две смотровые площадки (платная и бесплатная) и видовое кафе. Из смотровых площадок я советую платную, прежде всего, потому что она выше, и с нее откроются виды на Античные Римские форумы, Колизей и Капитолий с одной стороны, и с другой стороны – Средневековые Римские площади, виллу Боргезе  и другие достопримечательности. Билет стоит 8-10 евро.

#4. The most famous observation deck in Rome is the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter’s dome. From one side it has a view at the Vatican City with its palaces, gardens, museums, castle wall and part of Rome, from the other side – view of Saint Peter’s Square, which occupies the largest part of world’s smallest country and the Tiber's embankments. Keep in mind that in wintertime (October – April) the observation deck is open until 4 p.m. So it is better to visit it in the morning not to waste all your day standing in queues. You can buy a ticket for 4 euro and go up the whole way by foot or buy a ticket for 8 euro and use a lift to the loggia of Apostles, then go by foot 320 stairs more. Let me warn you about the staircase: it is spiral, very narrow and you will have to walk, all along buckling to the right. You may get tired but views of incredible Rome will make you forget about everything. Don’t forget about the dress-code valid in the Vatican City (you can read about it in my first article).

#4. Самая знаменитая смотровая площадка Рима – это купол собора Св. Петра в Ватикане. С одной стороны вы можете посмотреть на весь Ватикан с его дворцами, садами,  музеями и крепостной стеной, а также на Рим; с другой стороны – площадь Св. Петра, которая занимает значительную часть самого маленького в мире государства, и набережные Тибра. Имейте в виду, что в зимнее время (октябрь – апрель) смотровая площадка работает всего до четырех часов, поэтому лучше прийти с утра, чтобы не потратить весь день на стояние в очередях. Билет можно купить за 4 евро и подниматься очень высоко пешком, а  можно купить билет за 8 евро и подняться на лифте до лоджии апостолов, а затем ещё 320 ступенек пройти пешком. Предупреждаю сразу, что лестница винтовая, очень узкая, всё время придется идти, выгибаясь вправо. Возможно, вы устанете, но, увидев потрясающий Рим, вы забудете об усталости и обо всем на свете. Не забывайте о дресс-коде, действующем на территории Ватикана! (о нем я писала в первой статье про Рим).

#5. For those who are not ready to enjoy Rome’s views from The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter’s dome, I can suggest another observation deck which is near Vatican – in Castle of the Holy Angel. It's exactly the one, which had been visited by Julia Roberts in the movie "Eat, Pray, Love". Although these observation decks are quite close to each other, you will get absolutely another view at the Tiber's embankment, south-western Rome, the Vatican City, and an secret passage that links the Vatican City with the Castle called Passeto. The admission fee is 8 euro. 
 

#5. Для тех, кто не готов любоваться Римом с купола Собора Святого Петра, я могу посоветовать ещё одну смотровую площадку неподалеку – на Замке Святого Ангела. Именно на неё поднималась Джулия Робертс в самом начале фильма «Ешь, молись, люби». Несмотря на близость этих достопримечательностей, вам откроется совсем другой вид на набережные Тибра, юго-западную часть Рима, Ватикан и тайный ход, соединяющий Замок Св. Ангела и Ватикан – Пассето (il Passetto). Билет стоит около 8 евро.

Strolling down the Eternal City, don’t forget about the famous Roman hills which also give great opportunities to admire the city for free. L’Aventino, il Palatino and others will show you Rome from different sides. For those who have already been to Rome, I recommend visiting il Gianicolo. It is not very easy to get there, so I advise you to combine the walk to il Gianicolo and Trastevere (Rome's district). This hill is as high as Altare della Patria: approximately 80 meters; and it has a breathtaking panoramic view of the whole Rome.  It is enjoyable to look at familiar sights from unusual perspectives. There is a monument to a national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi on the top of the hill, which is visible from many places of the Tiber's embankment or Trastevere, that is why you'd easily find this hill.

Гуляя по Вечному городу, ни на минуту не забывайте о том, что в Риме есть множество холмов, с каждого из которых можно полюбоваться городом, причем, абсолютно бесплатно. Авентин (L’Aventino), Палатин (il Palatino) и другие покажут вам Рим с разных сторон. Для тех, кто в Риме не первый раз, я бы порекомендовала подняться на Яникул (il Gianicolo). Добираться до него не очень удобно, поэтому советую совместить посещения Яникула с прогулкой по Трастевере (район Рима). Высота этого холма такая же, как и у Алтаря Отчества – чуть больше 80 метров; с него открывается вид на весь Рим. Очень увлекательно искать знакомые достопримечательности с новых ракурсов. На вершине холма находится памятник народному герою – Джузеппе Гарибальди, который виден со многих точек набережной Тибра и Трастевере, поэтому найти его не составит труда.
